Calling all MCHS girls golfers

Girls entering grades 9-12 interested in playing golf at Michigan City High School this fall should contact head coach Drew White at 861-3804. All players must have an IHSAA physical and other necessary forms completed and turned in to the MCHS Athletic Department prior to the first day of practice Aug. 2. Forms are available in the athletic department.

Free fishing contest Saturday

Chief's Bait Shop is hosting a free steelhead fishing contest Saturday. A total of $500 in gift certificates will be awarded for the 12 heaviest steelies, starting with $200 for first place down to $25 for 12th. Fishing starts at 12:01 a.m. with weigh-in from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the bait shop, 1114 W. 4th St. (U.S. Hwy 12), Michigan City. For more information, see Chief's on Facebook or stop by the shop.

Play Day Golf Outing July 19

The La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership will host the 45th Annual Play Day Golf Outing on July 19 at Beechwood. Registration is at 8 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 9. Cost is $550 for teams of four. The event is sponsored by Blue Chip Casino Hotel & Spa, the La Porte County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Walsh & Kelly, Inc., Qubit Networks and Dermody For Mayor. The outing includes a hole-in-one contest sponsored by Sauers Buick GMC, the fastest hole contest, sponsored by the South Bend International Airport, and a putting contest, sponsored by Lakeshore Promotions and Gifts. Grand Prix Golf Outing July 31

The Great Lakes Grand Prix Golf Outing, sponsored by the Visit Michigan City LaPorte tourism bureau, will be July 31 at the Michigan City Municipal Golf Course. Lunch from Jimmy John's will be at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. Cost is $100 per player or $400 per foursome with drinks and prizes included. Hole sponsorships are available for $100. Proceeds benefit Reins of Life, a not-for-profit organization that serves children and adults with disabilities through equine-assisted activities. Annual Wiffle Ball tournament in New Carlisle

New Carlisle Hometown Days will host the 15th annual Wiffle®Ball Championship July 27-28. Pool play action begins July 27 at the New Prairie Little League complex with all teams guaranteed at least four games. The top 48 teams qualify for the July 28 Hometown Cup Playoffs, with the final four advancing to the Hometown Cup Finals at historic Migley Field. Registration is open until Saturday or until 80 teams are entered. Entry fee is $80. Teams consist of four or five players. The championship features slow pitch rules with base-running. RailCats clinic July 22

The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced they will offer a Legends for Youth free baseball clinic for kids, hosted by the MLB Players Alumni Association, July 22 at U.S. Steel Yard. The clinic will be presented by Gary native and former Major League pitcher Latroy Hawkins, Home Field Advantage and the RailCats. United Way Golf Outing August 12

The 11th annual United Way of La Porte County Golf Outing will be Aug. 12 at Pottawattomie Country Club in Michigan City. Registration and lunch begin at 11 a.m., with a shotgun start at noon, and a prime rib dinner and awards at 5 p.m. Cost is $900 for a foursome, which includes golf, cart, lunch, prime rib dinner, games and exclusive prizes, awards and trophies, water and soft drinks, beverage and food sampling booths, hole-in-one shots: win new cars from Sauers GMC/Buick.
