BOURBON — Do Simple Better.
The slogan was printed on the back of a softball sweatshirt at Monday's Class A Triton Sectional.
It couldn't have been more appropriate for LaCrosse, which couldn't do the simple in its opening game against West Central.
The Tigers committed six errors, had several other misplays that could have been outs and a myriad of wild pitches and passed balls that spelled doom in a 12-5 loss to the Trojans at Bourbon Community Park.
"Of those 12 runs up there, maybe a couple are earned," Tigers coach Dave Amor said. "If we make plays, we win this game. That's been the story all year. It's been a struggle."
Morgan Wozniak was touched up for 13 hits, but at least a few of those were catchable balls as the Tigers had issues, in particular, with anything hit in the air, save for a brilliant third-inning grab by center fielder Maddy Selby as she crashed into the fence.
"We had Hope (Klemz) out there (pitching) last year and they didn't have to make as many plays," Amor said. "With Morgan and Jersie (Bartels), they make decent pitches, but we've got to make the plays behind them."
LaCrosse actually held a 3-1 lead after an inning as Selby singled in a run and an Emily Leffew blooper just out of the infield plated a pair. Emily Pontbriand and Bartels doubled in the fourth to produce a run via a wild pitch. Trailing 7-4, the Tigers had the bases loaded with one out, but Selby bounced into a 1-2-3 double play on a bang-bang call at first. She knocked in her second run with a single in the sixth after an ugly four-run top half had put the game out of reach
"We hit. A hit here or there when we had bases loaded to keep that thing moving," Amor said. "I can't say much because we hit the ball, we just hit it right at people."
The Tigers had lost their season opener to West Central, 10-0.
"When we played them the first time, we had six girls in Spain and three girls in Florida and that was the first day back for everybody," Amor said. "Nobody had seen a ball until that day for about six days."
In LaCrosse's case, the season ended looking much the same way.
