Area hoops players in Underclass Showcase events

La Porte’s Garrott Ott-Large and Ryin Ott and Michigan City’s Trinity Thompson have been chosen to participate in IBCA/IHSAA Underclass Showcase events at Ben Davis High School.

The boys showcase runs from 1-6:45 p.m. on Saturday at Ben Davis High School, coinciding with the NCAA’s new “scholastic viewing period” in June this year after being in July in previous years. The girls showcase will be at the same time on July 15. The events are designed to give exposure to approximately 240 of the top basketball prospects (120 boys and 117 girls) from across the state to colleges across the state and nation. The showcase events are open to the public. Admission is $5 per person per day. IBCA-member coaches will be admitted at no charge by showing their membership card.

Dunes Volleyball Club Pre-Tryout Camp

Dunes Volleyball Club is offering a Pre-Tryout Camp July 29-Aug. 1 designed to prepare middle school players for school tryouts. Campers will work on basic fundamentals; passing, setting, hitting, serving and participate in tryout-oriented drills, game situation drills, and 6-on-6 games. The camp is at the Dunes Events Center, 110 Clear Lake Blvd., La Porte. The Veterans Camp for girls and boys entering the seventh-eighth grade runs from 5:30-8 p.m. Pre-registration discount costs $65. Same day sign-up costs $75. The Rookies Camp is for girls and boys entering the fifth-sixth grade and is from 5:30-7:30. Pre-registration discount costs $55. Same day sign-up costs $65.

Dunes Volleyball Club Young Guns Camp

Dunes Volleyball Club is offering a Young Guns Camp July 29-Aug. 1 designed to introduce volleyball to younger players by teaching them the skills of ball handling, hitting and serving. They use lighter volleyballs and lower nets, emphasizing teamwork, hustle and fun. The camp is open to girls and boys ages 10 and under and is at the Dunes Events Center, 110 Clear Lake Blvd., La Porte. The Big Dogs Camp for ages 10 and under is from 5:30-6:45 p.m. Pre-registration discount costs $50. Same-day sign-up costs $55. The Volley Tots Camp for ages eight and under is from 5:30-6:30. Pre-registration discount costs $30. Same-day sign-up costs $35. The Volley Tikes Camp for ages 5 and under is from 5:30-6:15. Pre-registration discount costs $20. Same-day sign-up costs $25.

McLain to appear in Three Oaks

The Biggest Little Baseball Museum and the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, Mich., will host Denny McLain, baseball’s last 30-game winner, on Saturday. The former Detroit Tiger, who won the American League MVP and Cy Young awards in 1968, when he went 31-6, will conduct an autograph session at the museum, located at 3 N. Elm St., from 9-11 a.m. At 11:30, he will appear on stage at the nearby Acorn Theater, where he will reminisce with fans about his teammates and the ‘68 world championship season. The presentation will be followed by another autograph session in the theater lobby. The $10 theater admission price includes a hot dog, unlimited soft drinks, and a box of Cracker Jack. There will also be a cash bar. Tickets are available on the Acorn website at www.acornlive.org.
