City golf takes two

Lia Thomas and Taylor Skibinski sizzled with co-medalist 36s as Michigan City swept a Duneland Conference girls golf triangular Thursday at Turkey Creek, 176-224-263 over La Porte and Merrillville. Sara Poulin (49) and Caroline Kearney (55) completed the scoring for the Wolves (7-1, 4-1). Jayme Noll paced LP with a 51, followed by Gabby Hull (55), Marley Schable (58) and both Brooklyn Herod and Emma Mitschelen (60).


Blazers swing past O-D

The Marquette girls golf team posted a 172-232 win over Oregon Davis at Michigan City Municipal's par 30 North Course on Thursday. The Blazers were paced by freshman Daniela Bellido with a 36 and Ann Peterson with a 39. The Marquette scoring was rounded out by Abby Novak and Sandra Paholski with 46 and 51, respectively.

Valpo outlasts City spikers 

Valparaiso overcame a 2-1 deficit to top Michigan City 25-22, 11-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-10, in Duneland Conference girls volleyball Thursday. Reece Shirley had another big game for the Wolves (6-2, 1-1), totaling 14 digs, 12 kills and nine assists. Aaliyah Briggs tallied seven kills, while Alexa Sparks made 15 assists and Micah Ruhe 22 digs. 

NP girls golf wins again

New Prairie won its fourth girls golf match in a row Thursday, handling South Bend Clay 208-260. Jordan WInters was medalist with a 46, one shot better than her sister Jaiden. Zoie Martinez shot 56 and Beth Armstrong 59. Coach Bruce Watson said the recent putting and chipping work is paying off.

City wins tennis thriller

Connor Reynolds overcame cramps and a third-set deficit to claim the decisive point in Michigan City's 3-2 boys tennis win Thursday over La Lumiere. Lucas White/John Bruning and Dante Morland/Josiah Miller posted quick victories in doubles for the Wolves (3-1).


Cougars blank Cavemen in tennis

Jacob Hannon pitched a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at two singles and New Prairie didn't drop a set on any court in a 5-0 boys tennis win over visiting Mishawaka on Thursday. Wrigley Hemphill (6-4, 6-1) and Nathan Middlebrook (6-2, 6-0), also scored singles victories for the Cougars (5-2) with Josh Ferrell/Colten Kitchen (6-2, 6-1) and Wreese Hemphill/Haydon Houser (6-1, 6-1) taking care of doubles.

Hanover aces Blazes

Sean Bardol rallied for an exciting 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory atop singles action Thursday afternoon at the Elston Courts, but stellar doubles play helped lift visiting Hanover Central to a 4-1 team win over the Blazers (2-2). The Wildcats (4-0) collected 6-0, 6-0 victories at both doubles flights.

NP falls in five 

New Prairie lost a gut-wrenching five-set volleyball thriller to South Bend St. Joseph on Thursday, 11-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 18-16. Elise Swistek powered the attack with 18 kills, followed by Katie Hancock (12) and Haley Robinson (nine). Hancock and Ellie Michiaels combined for a dozen blocks, while Shaye Tolch dished out 40 assists. Swistek and Robinson also picked up 19 digs each, with Hancock snagging 17.


Ingots boot Blackhawks

Sam Bovard and Chris Bishop scored and Carson Miller made nine saves but Anthony Garcia's hat trick lifted River Forest to a 4-2 boys soccer win over Westville (0-3) on Thursday.


Football tickets on sale

Tickets for Friday's Warsaw at Michigan City football game and Saturday's St. Ignatius (Ohio) and Loyola (Ill.) game at Ames Field are on sale today and Friday in the Michigan City High School athletics office. Friday's game is at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday's is at 1. Tickets cost $6 and $5, respectively.

Pumpkin Festival Run/Walk Oct. 5

The 21st Annual Pumpkin Festival Run, sponsored by Westville Tri Kappa, is set for Oct. 5 Registration is at 7 a.m. in the Westville High School parking lot with the 5K Run and 5K Walk set to begin at 8. These events are for adults. A kids race will be held at Prairie Meadow Park (Birch Field 1) at 1 p.m.

K of C Soccer Challenge Sept. 29

The Knights of Columbus of St. Michael Council in La Porte will hold its annual Soccer Challenge Sept. 29 at the YMCA soccer fields on Andrew Ave. The event is open to ages 9 to 14. Registration will take place from noon to 12:30 with the competition lasting until 3. Birth certificates are required.

MCBL signups Sept. 7

The Michigan City Baksetball League (MCBL) will conduct signups from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 7 at Kreueger School. The league is open to pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade boys and girls. Cost is $30. Registration can also be done at michigancity In addition, tryouts for seventh and eighth graders will be conducted at noon.
