County Special Olympians shine

Brittany Schilla won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and placed third in the mini javelin for La Porte County at the 50th Anniversary Special Olympics meet in Terre Haute Friday-Sunday. Scott Heminger was first in the 100, the 200 runner-up and fourth in the mini javelin. Nicole Manns finished second in the 100 and third in the shot put, while Terry Surrant took second in the 50 and the standing long jump to go with a sixth in the softball throw. Other medalists were: Chris Rader (second, 100, third, 200, fifth, shot put); Aaron Kreuger (second, 200, third, 100, fourth shot put); Robin Kloss (third, softball throw, fourth, 400, standing long jump); Matt Kier (fourth, 100, 200 and mini javelin); and Nicole Miller (fourth, 50, long jump, softball throw). 

Special Olympics La Porte County Golf Outing

There’s a need for golfers for Special Olympics La Porte County’s 16th annual golf outing on Saturday at Legacy Hills Golf Club in La Porte. Registration begins at noon and a shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. Cost is $70 per golfer, which includes a round of golf, cart, two drinks and one sandwich. They’re having a silent auction and money prizes for the winners. All money raised stays in La Porte County.

Annual Wiffle Ball tourney in New Carlisle

New Carlisle Hometown Days will host the 15th annual Wiffle®Ball Championship July 27-28. Pool play action begins July 27 at the New Prairie Little League complex with all teams guaranteed at least four games. The top 48 teams qualify for the July 28 Hometown Cup Playoffs, with the final four advancing to the Hometown Cup Finals at historic Migley Field. Registration is open until July 13 or until 80 teams are entered. Entry fee is $40 per team until June 29 and $80 after. Teams consist of four or five players. The championship features slow pitch rules with base-running.
