Homeward Bound parade set for Sept. 23

Twelve La Porte and Porter County organizations pulled this fundraiser together and are working to help raise awareness and lower incidences of homelessness in our communities. Our fundraiser is a community party entitled the “Homeward Bound Epic Shopping Cart/Wagon Parade.”

Last year we were blessed with more than $14,000 in donations, gifts and sponsorships and all participants had a great time. This year’s Shopping Cart/Wagon Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23 on Franklin Street in Michigan City. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in St. Paul Church parking lot (8th and Franklin streets) and the parade begins at 11 a.m.

Participants have up to two hours to decorate a shopping cart, dress in costumes and just have a great family day. The parade proceeds on the sidewalk North to the Library and returns South to 9th Street, and then returns to St Paul Church for music, prizes, games and food. CISV Michigan City-Lakeshore's junior branch will be hosting a community soccer game in conjunction with the Homeward Bound walk on Saturday, Sept. 23, immediately following the shopping cart walk. Children of all ages are encouraged to participate. CISV is the local chapter of a global peace education organization that focuses on human rights and has held a community soccer game in conjunction with Peace One Day, which is Sept. 21. You can learn more about CISV at www.cisvusa.org.

This year, we’ve asked our organizations to set up a display describing their efforts to help our most vulnerable citizens. Between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017, in La Porte County we’ve stabilized 229 people that were at risk of becoming homeless, housed 247 people that were homeless, and helped 254 people attain employment. This is truly a reason to celebrate so come out and join us.

If you want to put together a team, please email Leigh Coburn at leigh.coburn@comcast.net so we can ensure we have enough shopping carts available. We supply the shopping carts and participants provide wagons.
