Families support Promise Scholarship
The community support for Mayor Meer’s Promise Scholarship initiative has been overwhelmingly positive. This week, we received a very generous donation from three families.
These families understand, not only the importance of post-secondary education for our Michigan City youth, but how it will help provide an educated workforce for our area business community.
Thank you very much to these families for their generosity and support.

Time to raise tax on cigarettes
Raise It For Health Tobacco companies are always looking for young customers to try their products. After all, they advertise in many of the teen magazines and offer price discounts and coupons to make tobacco cheap and affordable.
Tobacco companies spend more than $280 million each year on marketing in Indiana. But, our Hoosier officials can protect kids from tobacco by raising the state's cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack. Raising cigarette taxes is a proven way to reduce youth smoking because it makes the products too expensive for price-sensitive kids.
Experts estimate that increasing Indiana's tax by $1.50 per pack will keep 49,000 kids from becoming smokers. Tobacco companies know raising taxes on their products results in fewer customers. That's why they'll spend millions of dollars to defeat any effort. That's why our elected leaders need to make the right choice and raise the tax. It's a great way to protect kids from tobacco.
