Time to make changes to township government?

Why are so many people running for Michigan Township trustee? There were seven, at last count.

The financial situation published by current trustee, Rodney Washington, on March 9 in The News-Dispatch may partially answer the question.

Of the $310,000 disbursed, fully $160,000 went to eight people for "personal services." By comparison, the amount of money (after administrative expenses, utilities, insurance, etc.) going to help those in need is pitiful. Is this what township assistance is supposed to be?

Ten years ago, a bipartisan commission recommended abolishing township government altogether, transferring duties to the counties. The current legislative proposed at least consolidation of small townships. I'm in favor of the former.

Finally, let's not forget the example of a former township trustee. She was elected year after year and used the township treasury as a piggy pank for herself and her son, much to her (and our) regret.
