Jerry H. Schliephake, 83, of Michigan City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at Trail Creek Place in Michigan City.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at 10 a.m. at the Root Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Huber, officiating. Viewing will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Root Funeral Home.
Jerry was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Herbert Otto and Evelyn Margaret (Heller) Schliephake.
Surviving are four children, Scott (Donna) Schliephake of Michigan City, Ross (Myra Tharp) Schliephake of Cataula, Georgia, Marie (Kevin) VanSickle of Michigan City and Jerry H. Schliephake Jr. of Michigan City; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Judith (Rod) Hendrickson of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Merry Pence of New Port Ritchie, Florida; his former wife whom he stayed friends with Phyllis Long; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cathy Morris and Vickie Rielley; and one brother, Ronald.
Jerry was a Long Beach Police Officer and worked as a designer/drafter for firms in Michigan City before moving to Alabama. In Alabama he bought a tropical fish store and loved sharing his hobby and knowledge with others. He then moved to Alaska and back to Michigan City to be closer to his family.
He loved running marathons, collecting coins and stamps and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was also a proud U.S. Army veteran.
