MICHIGAN CITY – A 41-year-old man was shot to death early Saturday on the east side, just blocks away from the Michigan City Police Department.

Officers from MCPD Uniform Patrol Shift III were conducting a routine patrol in the Eastport neighborhood just before 2 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

Officer Daniel Revoir radioed the station saying he heard gunshots in the area. Moments later, a resident called 911 to report that someone had been shot in the 200 block of Grace Street.

Patrol units arrived at the scene moments later and found the 41-year-old man on the ground. "He was found to have been shot and was deceased," a statement from MCPD said.

The police Investigative Division, as well as the La Porte County Sheriff's Investigative Division responded to the scene and a homicide investigation was ongoing as of Saturday afternoon.

Police said no further details would be released Saturday.

If the incident is ruled a homicide, it would be the fifth fatal shooting of the year in Michigan City, and the ninth since last July.

On Jan. 7, a Michigan City woman fatally shot her parents and later turned the gun on herself in a home in the 6800 block of North Meer Road. On Jan. 16, 18-year-old Justin Ameer Garner was shot to death while sitting inside a vehicle in the 200 block of Jackson Street. Then 16-year-old Javan Brown has been charged with murder in that case.

And on March 30, 27-year-old Darrell Edwards was found shot to death about 2 a.m. in the 1000 block of Holliday Street, according to police. No arrest has been made in that case.
