In brief

The Art In Nature series, hosted by Tryon Farm and Kristina Isabella Dance Co., kicks off Friday, Sept. 13, with the documentary film, "Mr. Canoe," projected on the barn. The film, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., tells the story of Ralph Frese – master canoe builder, historian and expedition paddler – and his 1976 expedition recreating Lasalle's trip from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and its snow storm portage through Northwest Indiana. Director James Forni will be onsite to share his story and the making of this film; and musician Tom Kastle will perform maritime songs and stories relating to Frese. Suggested donation is $20 for adults and $10 for kids. Tryon Farm is located at 1500 Tryon Rd. in Michigan City. For more information, contact Kristina Isabelle at

Guests can arrive as early as 6 p.m., and purchase and decorate luminaria for $5 each. The lighting ceremony will begin around dusk at 6:30 p.m. Visitors are invited to stay to observe how the glow of the candles brightens as the sun sets, she said.
