Jail employee promoted to patrol deputy

Austin Epple

La PORTE – A La Porte County Jail deputy hired last year has been promoted to fill an opening in the department's Merit (Patrol) Division.

La Porte County Sheriff's Dep. Austin R. Epple, 26, started working for the department on Aug. 2, 2018, working as a jail deputy, according to Sheriff's Capt. Derek Allen. On Aug. 31, 2019, he was promoted by Sheriff John Boyd to patrol deputy and transferred to the Merit Division.

Allen said patrol deputies "routinely rotate throughout the county to the different assigned districts."

Epple was born in Indianapolis and was a 2012 graduate of La Porte High School, according to the sheriff's department. He continued his education at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he was a player on the varsity football team. During the summer of 2016, he completed a college accredited internship with the sheriff’s department, and in December 2017, he graduated from Loras with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice.

The promotion of Epple fills a vacancy within the ranks of the Merit Division, Allen said. He is currently enrolled in a basic recruit session at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, where he is scheduled to graduate later this year.

“We are really excited about the hiring of Deputy Epple," Sheriff Boyd said. "He is a genuine and enthusiastic young man. We are anxiously awaiting his return from ILEA and are looking forward to the service he will provide the citizens of La Porte County.”
