La Porte compost site clused due to fair

La PORTE – The Solid Waste District of La Porte County’s compost site located near the La Porte County Fairgrounds on Zigler Road in La Porte will be closed through July 14 due to the road being closed for the La Porte County Fair. Residents can use the Michigan City Yard Waste Dropoff Site at 1027 Hitchcock Rd. Regular hours at the La Porte Compost Site will resume on July 15. For more information, call 219-326-0014.


Open house at new SERA Solutions site

MICHIGAN CITY – SERA Solutions, a digital marketing agency that specializes in website design, digital advertising, and analytics, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a new office space from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at 720 Franklin St., Suite A. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served and a caricaturist will provide entertainment. SERA Solutions opened its new office in late 2018 with new technology and advancements, which create new jobs and assist local businesses.

The location was chosen to optimize SERA’s ability to provide a more visible and central location with additional space for future expansion, according to Seth Spencer, founder and CEO. “Michigan City has proven to be a great market for us and expanding our services and workforce here was an easy decision. Our team is excited about the continued economic progress in Michigan City and is happy to be a part of the community.” The company is eager to expand its volunteer work with local schools, nonprofits and small businesses, he said.


Firefighters complete training academy

VALPARAISO – A total of 26 new volunteer firefighters, representing 11 area departments, will celebrate the completion of a rigorous 6-month training academy at the Multi Agency Academic Cooperative (MAAC) Foundation. These men and women have spent nights and weekends, at their own expense, completing the necessary training to become certified firefighters. The graduation ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 11, in the Wheeler High School auditorium at 587 W. CR- 300N in Valparaiso. Among the graduates will be Tyler Bohle, Logan Doperalski, Maxwell Lutz and Scott Paull of the Coolspring Fire Department; and Jacob Goodwin and Jamie Marvel of the Springfield Twp. Fire Department.

Household hazardous waste collection event

MICHIGAN CITY – The Solid Waste District of La Porte County will conduct a Household Hazardous Waste event on Saturday at the Marquette Mall West Parking Lot from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Residents can bring any household chemicals such as oil, antifreeze, oil-based paint, fertilizers, etc. for proper recycling and/or disposal. Also accepted are sharps/syringes contained in a hard-sided container such as a laundry detergent bottle, and medications placed in a clear resealable bag. Latex-based paint will not be accepted. South Shore changes for Taste of Chicago

CHESTERTON –  The following South Shore Line service updates will be in effect to accommodate passengers attending the Taste of Chicago from Wednesday, July 10, through Sunday, July 14, in Grant Park. Alcohol will not be permitted on trains after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and all day Saturday and Sunday. Passengers should expect crowded conditions and an increased NICTD transit police presence.

On Saturday and Sunday, westbound Trains 606 and 506 will operate extras for additional capacity, and will make all regular stops to Chicago. An eastbound extra will depart Millennium Station at 4:25 p.m., run non-stop to Hegewisch and make all local stops terminating at Carroll Avenue in Michigan City. A second eastbound extra will depart Millennium Station at 6 p.m., run non-stop to Hegewisch and make all local stops terminating at Carroll Avenue.
