MICHIGAN CITY – If Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, WhatsApp, Messenger, Email and SnapChat sound like a foreign language to you, the Michigan City Senior Center thinks it’s time you got up to speed on social media platforms.
"You may ask why? What are all these things, and do I even need them in my life? Well, we have the answers to those questions," said Senior Center director Tara Miller.
Offered weekly is a class that focuses on teaching people more about their personal devices – iPad, smartphone, Nook, tablet, laptop (or whatever).
"It’s called our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) class and our expert member, Debbie Henckel, will help you get the most out of your device," Miller said. "Are you utilizing all of the features of your smartphone? Are you able to text, send pictures and download apps that help make your life easier? Do you even know what an 'App' is? She can show you."
There will also be a special presentation on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m., when Henckel will discuss the different devices available on the market today.
"Are you thinking about buying a device for yourself or possibly upgrading to a new smartphone? Are you contemplating buying a family member or friend one of these devices as a gift? How do you know which one to purchase?" Miller said.
"This presentation will help you make that decision. Debbie will provide specific information to help guide you as you head into the holiday shopping season as to which device best fits your needs and preferences."
Henckel is also available for individual classes on topics such as social media, devices or basic computer skills, Miller said.
"It’s an easy way to find out what all the hype is about in emerging technology and the social media world."
Senior Center members can participate in all classes at no charge. To become a member, you must be 55 or older, and pay a membership fee of $10 per year. New members can sign up at the Center at 2 on the Lake in Washington Park. For more information, contact Miller at email@example.com or 219-873-1504.
