MICHIGAN CITY – The Michiana Humane Society is looking for foster homes for 27 cats, including four adults and 23 kittens, who were dumped off at the shelter Thursday morning.
According to a Humane Society executive director Johanna Humbert, a shelter volunteer saw a pickup offloadings eight carrying cases in front of the shelter about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. As the truck pulled away, the volunteer approached the bundles and heard mewing, she said.
Staff rushed to get the cats and kittens out of the small bags they were stuffed into, and moved them into crates, Humbert said. Altogether, there were four adult cats and 23 kittens in the carrying cases.
Some of the kittens are still nursing, while others are probably old enough to be adopted, Humber said.
Shelter manager Karen Edwards said the cats all seem to be in fairly good condition.
"There's one runt in the litter, and we're hoping he's going to be OK," she said. "But we don't know what they've gone through before they came here. But a little TLC and they should be fine."
The society thanked Petey's Fund for Sick Animals, which is responsible for the funds being available to cover the anticipated $1,500-plus cost of vetting, spaying and neutering all the cats.
But the Humane Society needs more help, Humber said. "We urgently need fosters to get the nursing mothers and kittens out of the shelter." Anyone interested in fostering can call the shelter at 219-872-4499, or email email@example.com.
Edwards said foster homes should be quiet without a lot of activity because the kittens are on the "scared side." Animals at the foster home should also be up to date on vaccinations. The cats will all be vaccinated before they are allowed in foster homes.
This wasn't the first time the Michiana Humane Society has dealt with a situation like this. Edwards said several years ago someone dropped off 30 cats at the shelter, and another time someone dropped off nine dogs.
