Visclosky to headline LWV annual meeting

MICHIGAN CITY – The League of Women Voters of La Porte County will feature one of the longest-serving and most popular members of Congress as guest speaker for its annual meeting and brunch.

U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky was born in Northwest Indiana and has represented the 1st Congressional District since 1985. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, chairman of the Defense Appropriation Subcommittee, and a member of the Energy and Water Subcommittee.

He attended local schools then earned degrees from Indiana University and Notre Dame, and ultimately a Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown Law Center.

"Local citizens report that they appreciate Pete’s approachability and modest manner," said Jo Ann Engquist, LWV spokeswoman. "Along with colleagues from both major parties, he has eagerly interacted with LWVLC members during Legislative Meetings, for many years.

She is excited to have Visclosky as the special guest at the meeting on Saturday, June 15, in Michigan City.

"Whether reading a story like 'Pete the Cat' to a local Head Start Class, or visiting students and participating in the recent Renaming Ceremony at Indiana Dunes National Park, Pete has been responsive to his constituents regardless of their politics," she said. "He is especially well known for his work on the environment representing the people who live and work near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Nationally, the LWV envisions a democracy where everyone has the desire, the right, the knowledge, and the confidence to participate, Engquist said. The League is nonpartisan, and has both women and men as active members since the early 1970’s.

"It’s goal is to develop educated voters who will determine who has earned their vote. The League is proud of their famous national program, Vote 411, that helps achieve this goal. Locally, the LWVLC offers educational programs each month that are open to the public and candidate forums that introduce the public to issues as well as candidates who will be on their ballots," Engquist said.

The Annual Meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at Pottawattomie Country Club, 1900 Springland Ave. The cost for members is $25. Nonmembers are welcome to attend for $35 for the brunch and program. For additional information about LWVLC or to RSVP for the meeting, call 219-874-9939.
