MICHIGAN CITY – Registration deadline for the New Teacher Luncheon, hosted by the Lakeshore Career Network and Michigan City Area Chamber of Commerce, is noon on Friday. All new teachers and administrators from area schools will be welcomed at the event, which is open to the public. Port Authority meets Monday

MICHIGAN CITY – The Michigan City Port Authority Board of Directors will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, in the Boardroom at 200 Hiesman Harbor Dr. The agenda includes updates on port operations, the Bath House project, Dock Re-Decking project and pier lights.

 

MCPD hosts basketball tourney for youth

MICHIGAN CITY – The Michigan City Police Department will be hosting a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for local youth from 2:30-4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the courts behind the police station at Michigan Boulevard and Cleveland Avenue. "We are encouraging the community to join us on our basketball court at the police station to play basketball with the community youth," Chief Mark Swistek said. County Parks Board to meet

Household Hazardous Waste collection

WANATAH – The Solid Waste District of La Porte County will conduct a Household Hazardous Waste event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Kankakee Valley REMC at 8642 W. U.S. 30 in Wanatah. Any household chemicals such as oil, antifreeze, oil-based paint, fertilizers, etc. can be brought in for recycling and/or disposal. Also accepted are sharps/syringes contained in a hard-sided container such as a laundry detergent bottle, and medications placed in a clear resealable bag. Lyric Opera to perform in Gardens

MICHIGAN CITY – Friendship Botanic Gardens will host the Lyric Opera of Chicago to preview its 2019-20 season on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. The event will include performances by Chicago Lyric Opera artists Kimberly Jones, Maia Surace, Cornelius Johnson and others, and include arias from Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” “Puccini Madame Butterfly” and Broadway favorites “Porgy and Bess,” “42nd Street,” “Showboat” and for the first time, “Hamilton!”

General admission tickets are available on Eventbrite for $45. They will also be sold at the door the day of the event. Premium seating tickets are sold out. All proceeds contribute to the continued restoration and maintenance of Friendship Botanic Gardens. The performance will begin promptly at 4 p.m. Arrive at 3 p.m. for wine, beer, other beverages and light appetizers. Friendship Botanic Gardens is located at 2055 E. U.S. 12 in Michigan City. Looking for more NWI Legends

HAMMOND – Nominations are open hrough Sept. 3 to honor a new class of Northwest Indiana Legends at the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority in Hammond. New Legends will be inducted on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the South Shore CVA’s Indiana Welcome Center. Legends are individuals, living or dead, who have had a substantial impact with “lasting implications” and have lived or worked in the seven counties of Northwest Indiana, which are La Porte, Porter, Lake, Jasper, Newton, Pulaski and Starke. These individuals were “trailblazers” and “exemplars” whose records of personal conduct serve as an example for others.

Past Legends include U.S. Army Air Corps Capt. James M. Kirk; Lowell Thomas; W.F. Wellman; the Tuskegee Airmen of Northwest Indiana; Jean Shepherd; stage and screen star Karl Malden; boxing great Tony Zale; Vee-Jay Records co-founder Vivian Carter; Apollo 8 Commander Frank Borman; Dr. William Scholl; Indiana’s 20th Civil War Regiment; and recipients of Congressional Medals of Honor and the Nobel Prize.
