County Redevelopment Commission to meet
La PORTE – The La Porte County Redevelopment Commission will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the La Porte County Complex Annex in Meeting Room 3. The meeting will include updates on the Construction Rail Planning Committee, the U.S. 421/I-94 TIF project, and the Ind. 39 North Water Tower.
NAACP & Beyond Coal to host rally
MICHIGAN CITY – The Northwest Indiana NAACP and Beyond Coal will host a "No NIPSCO Cost Shift Rally BBQ & Potluck" event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Pullman Park, 55o W. 4th St. In Michigan City. The goal of the free family event is to rally opposition to a proposed NIPSCO rate hike which would increase rates on residential customers about 12 percent, while giving a rate cut to large industrial customers.
Local children will be creating their own Renewable Power Ranger costumes and capes, and wearing that at the event. The rally will begin at 6 p.m, followed by a community BBQ with live dance by the Soul Steppers Drill Team Inc. and poetry by Red Rah. Volunteers sought for 1-hour cruise
MICHIGAN CITY — Organizers are searching for volunteers for the 21st annual Boat Cruise for Our Friends with Disabilities on Friday starting at 5 p.m. The cruise lasts for 1 hour. Organizers need dockside volunteers, cooks and picnic assistans.
The event starts at 5 p.m. when the bolunteer boats depart from the Yacht Club wall for a short evening cruise. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a picnic for all participants and volunteers with live entertainment. LP County Symphony Orchestra to present

Purdue Extension to host vegetable field day
WANATAH – The public and those who raise vegetables commercially or as a hobby are invited to a Purdue Extension vegetable and high tunnel field day at 5 p.m. Aug. 13 at Pinney Purdue Ag Center at 11402 S. County Line Road in Wanatah. Participants will hear presentations from Purdue specialists, then can choose a track on vegetable production or utilizing fresh vegetables. Laura Ingwell, entomologist, will provide tips on organic insect management and will discuss the melon pollinator research project she is overseeing at Pinney PAC. Liz Maynard, Purdue Extension commercial vegetable specialist, will review and demonstrate the benefits of biodegradable plastic mulch for use with vegetables.
A meal that includes taste testing varieties of sweet corn will follow the educational program.
