Volunteers wanted for Lend a Hand Day
La PORTE – If you can sew, cut, stitch, tie, knit, crochet, pack, stack or carry, the La Porte County Extension Homemakers are looking for help for their next Lend A Hand Day on June 4. It will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Community Building at the La Porte County Fairgrounds at 2581 W. SR 2 in La Porte. Volunteers and members will assemble quilts, bags, backpacks, lap robes, wheelchair totes, birthday bags, hats and other items that will be donated to county residents through local service organizations.
Donations of fabrics, notions, thread, yarn and supplies are also needed. Volunteers can bring their own sewing machines or can use one provided, and can stay as long as they want. Final meeting of KRBC planned in Knox
KNOX – The final meeting of the Kankakee River Basin Commission, established in 1977, will be at 9:30 a.m. June 13 at the Community Center at 55 E. Lake St. in Knox. Beginning in July, the Kankakee River Basin and Yellow River Basin Development Commission will pick up where the KRBC left off.
Siavash Beik and Bob Barr are scheduled to present Burke Engineering's draft final report, and several state lawmakers and other guests are expected to attend to mark the occasion and highlight enactment of Public Law 282. Haverstock to host program for vets
La PORTE – Haverstock Funeral Home will host its 2019 Veterans Program at 2 p.m. June 15, a day of fellowship and refreshments to honor all those who served. All veterans will receive a Challenge Coin and other special items; and an Honor Video will be shown to recognize those in attendance.
Anyone wishing to share a photo of a veteran for the video should contact 219-362-3333 or firstname.lastname@example.org. All veterans and their families are welcome to attend, but should RSVP by June 1 to reserve a coin or add photos to the video. The event will be held at 602 Maple Ave. in La Porte.
La Porte Rotary celebrating 75 years
La PORTE – Members of the Rotary Club of La Porte will join representatives of Rotary International, Rotary District 6540, and area Rotary clubs to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the club’s formation. The event will be held June 15 at the historic Masonic Temple, the same location where the club was chartered on June 17, 1944. A reception starts at 5:30 p.m. in the third floor parlor, with dinner and program following at 6:30 p.m. in the adjacent dining room.
Brett Binversie, club president, will preside at the celebration, and said he hopes it will help more people learn about the impact the Rotary Club has had on the community over its 75 years. In addition to community projects sponsored by the club, more than $130,000 has been contributed to The Rotary Foundation.
