School Board to interview candidates

MICHIGAN CITY – The Michigan City Area Schools Board of Education will conduct a work session at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, in the Board Room at the MCAS Administration Building at 408 S. Carroll St. The meeting will be to interview prospective candidates for the School Board vacancy created by the resignation of Joanne Tedesco. The public can attend, but will not be able to comment or ask questions.

 

VFW Voice of Democracy competition

MICHIGAN CITY – VFW Post 2536 and The Auxiliary are announcing the annual Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. High school (or home-schooled) students in grades 9-12 can compete in the essay competition and win thousands of dollars in scholarships, a trip to Washington, D.C. or other awards. This year’s theme is ”What Makes America Great?” Students begin by competing at the local level. Post 2536 will award $50 to the local winners, who advance to District and then State competition. The State winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., plus the opportunity to compete for national scholarships. The National winner receives a $30,000 scholarship.

Voice of Democracy is an annual audio essay contest designed to foster patriotism by giving students the opportunity to voice their opinion about their personal obligations as an American. Deadline for entries must be received at VFW Post 2536 by Oct. 31. Students must write and then record their 3- to 5-minute essay on a cassette tape or CD. Aviation Board meeting date changed

MICHIGAN CITY – The regular meeting of the Board of Aviation Commissioners, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12, has been changed to Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. at the airport terminal building.

 

Ideas & Info Exchange at Brewery Lodge

MICHIGAN CITY – Visit Michigan City La Porte will host its September Idea & Information Exchange at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Brewery Lodge 5727 N. CR-600W in Michigan City. The evening will include tours of the hotel/restaurant, refreshments and a chance to network. Guests are reminded to bring brochures, sales coupons and sales flyers for the information table; and gifts for the door awards. Registration open for Sunflower 5K

La PORTE – The La Porte Kiwanis Sunflower 5K Run & Fun Walk – part of the annual Sunflower Fair – will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, with registration starting at 6:45 a.m. Cost is $15 for runners 15 and under; and $20 for adults through Sept. 20, or $25 on race day. There will be prizes for top male and female finishers, as well as age group medals. The course will start and finish at the La Porte County YMCA and go along Michigan Avenue.
