MICHIGAN CITY – Democratic precint chairs will be meeting next week to fill a short-term vacancy on the Michigan City Common Council.
La Porte County Democratic Chairwoman Carl McDaniel has announced that the Democratic Party will conduct a caucus on Thursday, Sept. 5, to fill the vacant Second Ward seat. The vacancy was created when Candice Silvas resigned her council seat because she moved out of the ward.
The caucus will be to select someone to fill the remainder of that term, which expires at the end of the year. The seat will then be filled for the next term in the November Municipal election. Democrat Paul Przybylinski and Republican Alina Ursida have filed to run for the seat in general election.
McDaniel said Pryzbylinski and Kathryn Stransky have applied to fill the remainder of the term. Stransky finished third in a three-way Democratic Primary race for the seat in May, taking just over 22 percent of the vote to Przybylinky's 50 percent and Michael Gresham's 28 percent.
Anyone else wishing to apply must do so by contacting McDaniel no later than 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2.
The caucus will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall. There are four precincts in the 2nd Ward and only the four precinct chairs are eligible to vote at the caucus.
Silvas was elected to the council in November 2015, defeating Republican Keith Harris in the municipal election.
In a Aug. 14 statement on her Facebook page, she said she was excited about her new home, but "... it is also bittersweet, as it also officially coincides with my resignation as the 2nd Ward Council representative for the City of Michigan City.
"I am extremely saddened that this chapter of my life has come to a close. The last 3 1/2 years have been some of the most rewarding in my life. I’ve met some absolutely amazing people, we were able to get many things accomplished, and I am optimistic for our city’s future," Silvas said.
"I’ve made many new friends, and lost a few along the way. It’s been an honor serving the residents of the 2nd Ward, and I look forward to opportunities to serve my city in a different capacity."
