Free well water screening kits

La PORTE COUNTY — To celebrate National Drinking Water Week, the La Porte County Health Department is offering free well water screening kits to La Porte County residents. This service is being offered to La Porte County residents with private water supplies (wells). One kit per person/per La Porte County address. Residents may pick up an in-home screening test kit starting Monday, April 30, while supplies last, at the La Porte County Health Department offices. This an in-house well water screening test kit that screens for 10 different analytes: Bacteria, iron, copper, pesticides, lead, total nitrate/nitrite, total hardness, pH and chlorine. Residents are asked to perform the testing by May 31 (some test kits expire at the end of May), fill out the self-addressed stamped postcard and mail the results to the LPCHD by June 8. All results received before June 8 will be entered into a drawing to win a gift card.

Cribs for Kids

La PORTE COUNTY — The La Porte County Health Department is gearing up for its Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep Tour of the county. Classes are being held at all local county library branches during the month of May and early June. Those in need of a safe place for their baby to sleep or wanting an update on the current standards of safe sleep for infants should call the La Porte County Health Department at 219-326-6808, ext. 2200, and ask to speak to a nurse to determine eligibility and to pre-register. Limited seating is available for each event.

• 10 a.m. May 25, La Porte County Public Library, main branch

• 1:30 p.m. May 25, Hanna Public Library

• 10 a.m. May 31, Coolspring Public Library

• 2 p.m. May 31, Fish Lake Public Library

• 1:30 p.m. June 1, Kingsford Heights Public Library
