Franciscan, YMCA offering free health walks
MICHIGAN CITY — Franciscan Health Michigan City is offering Wellness Wednesdays, a free family health and wellness program, through Oct. 24 (no program July 4). Registration and a stretching session will begin at 4:45 p.m. for a 5 p.m. run-walk course at the Elston YMCA, 1202 Spring St. Runners go through the Uptown Arts District and Washington Park before returning to the YMCA, which will be open for tours. Participants will receive a free, one-week YMCA pass for the first walk; a free Healthlinc sweat band for the fourth walk; and a free t-shirt for the sixth. Free program on taking care of babies
La PORTE — Dr. Bethany Cluskey, obstetrician and gynecologist with La Porte Physician Network Women’s Care, is inviting moms and parents-to-be with questions to meet her personally for a free program, “Taking Care of Baby Starts Before She’s Born.” The program will last from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the Best Western Plus La Porte Hotel & Conference Center at 444 Pine Lake Ave. in La Porte. The program, free and open to the public, is designed for anyone who is pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, and for significant others, family or friends who are supporting pregnant moms. Cluskey will discuss nutrition and exercise recommendations and how they change with pregnancy and breastfeeding. Intrepid Phoenix program expanding to Porter, Lake
MICHIGAN CITY — Franciscan Health and The Intrepid Phoenix are announcing a collaboration to provide fitness services to residents of Porter and Lake counties who recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. The Intrepid Phoenix program launched in July 2017 in La Porte and has grown to 70 active members in La Porte and Michigan City.
It combines fellowship and a 12-step program with a holistic approach to fitness in the recovery process, including yoga, resistance, cardiorespiratory and core training, along with nutrition education provided by certified professionals. Goals include lower rates of relapse, higher rates of abstinence, improved physical fitness and improved mental/emotional health.
Beginning in July 2018, The Intrepid Phoenix program participants will have complete access to all fitness facilities and group exercise classes at Franciscan Health Fitness Centers in Chesterton and Schererville. For more information, contact Larry Smith at email@example.com.
CareEnroll to expand La Porte headquarters
CareEnroll, which helps patients enroll in health care plans and maintain coverage, has announced plans to expand its La Porte-based headquarters and Fishers-based satellite office. The company, founded in 2015, plans to employ nearly 200 associates by the end of 2021, adding to its current staff of 80.
The company will invest more than $3 million to renovate and update its 14,400-square-foot headquarters at 1900 W. Severs Road in La Porte, with building enhancements, and new equipment and software. The renovations will include an expanded break room with canteen-style food and beverage options; a mother’s room; privacy nooks, and a 4,400-square-foot call center. It will also provide additional space for professional development training, including new workstations.
