'Mary Poppins Jr.' premieres Friday at Holdcraft Center

MICHIGAN CITY — The Young People's Theatre Company Jr. in collaboration with Michigan City Area Schools presents a musical based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney Film, "Mary Poppins Jr." The production will take place June 28 and 29 at 7 p.m., and June 29 and 30 at 2 p.m. at the Holdcraft Performing Arts Center, 1200 Spring St., Michigan City. Original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Book by Jullian Fellowes. New songs and additional music by George Stiles and Anthoney Drews. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available online at www.yptcinc.com.

Cast members include Anna Jasnieski at Bert, Liliana Henning as George Banks, Isabelle Kieft as Winifred Banks, Madison Gresham as Jane Banks, Chase Lowery as Michael Banks, Anastasia O'Shea as Katie Nana, Ashley Sparks as Mrs. Brill, Meaghan Painter as Robertson Ay, Kirsten Carlson as Mary Poppins, Kensleigh Kieft as Neleus, Emily Bolen as the Bird Woman, Gabriella Tompkins as Miss Smythe, Marie Lampton as the Chairman, Rebecca Waldron as Von Hussler, Alexis Gresham as John Northbrook, Tatiana Miller as Mrs. Corry, Kayla Campbell as Miss Andrew, Hannah Jones as the Messenger, and Rachael Small, Audrey Posten, Briana Bonds and Miykha Woodard as the Ensemble.

 

Show Up & Show Out drill/drum/dance competition on Saturday

MICHIGAN CITY — In conjunction with the Michigan City Patriotic Parade, the Michigan City Soul Steppers Drill Team will present Show Up & Show Out 12, a "3D" drill/drum/dance competition Saturday at Michigan City High School, 8466 W. Pahs Road. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. with the event starting at 5:30. Competing teams are coming from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee and more. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door (children 5 and under are admitted free). Tickets are available at the Parks & Rec Department in City Hall, Captain Ed's Candy, the Michigan City Senior Center or by calling Lyn Isbell at 219-809-1155. The event will also include raffles, concessions and family entertainment.

 

Friendship Botanic Gardens to Host Free Bug Safari event on July 14

MICHIGAN CITY — On Sunday, July 14, from 2 to 4 p.m., Friendship Botanic Gardens will host a Bug Safari, which is a free afternoon of invertebrate adventures in the diverse natural habitats found throughout the 105-acre garden.

Families can discover a hidden world of marvelous mini-beasts living all around them while viewing live creepy-crawlies.

Bring your nets and magnifying glasses to learn about the crucial roles insects play in the community through hands-on, children’s craft activities.
