MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City Fire Department recently hired six new probationary firefighters.

Chief Randy Novak and members of the fire department have announced that Tia Free, Jory Palmer, Randall Hallett, Austin Swistek, Brian Gonzalez and Jacob Kubath are the newest members of the MCFD.

Five of the new recruits recently graduated from the South Bend Fire Academy. The academy was a 22 week course. All new recruits obtained their EMT certifications and received their Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications along with their Hazmat awareness certifications. Probationary Firefighter Jacob Kubath will be attending the academy this fall.

Novak said, "We're excited to add these young men and women to our roster of talented firefighters."
