Groundbreaking for new LP Hospital

La PORTE — La Porte Hospital will conduct a new hospital groundbreaking event from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot bordered by Teegarden, Washington, Tyler and State Streets in La Porte.

Martinec new Food Bank executive director

SOUTH BEND — The board of directors of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana has announced that Marijo Martinec has been named executive director. She has served as the organization’s associate director since 2013. Martinec will begin her tenure on Sept. 3, replacing Milt Lee who has been named executive director of Downtown South Bend, Inc.

Martinec is a graduate of Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame. Since 2010, she has held various positions at the Food Bank including marketing, events, community engagement and development. Most recently, she served as associate director.

Founded in 1993, the Food Bank of Northern Indiana distributed 7.2 million pounds of food through its network of 150 agency partners in La Porte, St. Joseph and four other counties.

Groundbreaking for new HealthLinc site

MISHAWAKA — HealthLinc is having a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly expanded HealthLinc Community Health Center at noon (CDT) Thursday at 420 West 4th St. in Mishawaka, with guest speakers Jill Donnelly, wife of U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, Mishawaka Mayor David Woods, and Jeff Rea, president of the South Bend Regional Chamber.

NICK Foundation ‘ponies’ up for cancer awareness

The Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation is hosting its annual awareness weekend with a Kentucky Derby gala at Villa Cesare in Schererville on Saturday, Sept. 8. The weekend will wrap up with a Kentucky Derby Family Festival at Redar Park in Schererville on Sunday, Sept. 9. A derby gala ticket is $75 and includes dinner, drinks, entertainment, auctions and more from 6 p.m. until midnight.

The family festival features stick-horse racing, awareness walk, food, auctions, face painting and more from 2-6 p.m. All proceeds o will assist the NICK Foundation mission to help local kids battling cancer.
