Youth Services

The Summer Reading Program begins June 10. Keep track of your reading hours and earn prizes. There are special family events on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. beginning June 20. There's a Universe of Stories out there. Read them this summer.

Sunday, May 19

1 p.m. Pokemon Day — Celebrate Pokemon Go Community day. The library Pokestop will have a lure placed on it by staff and there will be Pokemon-themed giveaways, while supplies last! Call Jonathan at 219-873-3045 for more information.

2 p.m. The Golfmore Hotel: A Grand Place — The Golfmore Hotel was located on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Michigan Shores/Grand Beach subdivisions. During a brief period from 1923-1939 the Golfmore Hotel was comparable in amenities, size and appearance to Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel. Tom Suhs has researched the Golfmore Hotel and will tell its history through photographs, period postcards, newspaper advertisements and articles, newsreel videos, period music and promotional brochures. Highlights include its role as a popular vacation and winter sports destination and as the location of boxer training camps for pugilists Georges Carpentier, Tommy Gibbons and “The Cinderella Man” James Braddock.

5 p.m. Graphic Novel Club — Join our Graphic Novel Club for ages 13-18. We’ve talked about Marvel’s Captain Marvel. Now let’s meet DC’s Captain Marvel in Shazam by Jeff Smith. Billy Batson was just an ordinary kid until he met a wizard who granted him the power to thwart evil wherever it arises. Join us as we read the Monster Society of Evil in May. 5:30 p.m. Needle Art League — The Needle Arts League of Michigan City promotes all forms of needle arts. Membership is open to anyone interested in needle arts such as crochet, needlepoint, cross stitch, crewel, tatting and other hand stitching. All skill levels and ages are welcome. An exchange of skills and materials is encouraged. For information, call 219-873-3049.
