MICHIGAN CITY — The Center for Creative Solutions is celebrating World Creativity and Innovation Week 2019 by sponsoring the third annual poetry contest for high school, middle school and elementary students.

The Nest, at 803 Franklin St., Michigan City, will be the venue hosting the event on April 20.

The Center sponsors the celebration of World Creativity and Innovation Week, each year near the date of Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday (April 15) to highlight the creative genius of the folks of La Porte County and all of Northwest Indiana. This year World Creativity and Innovation Week will be celebrated from April 15 to April 21.

A panel of judges will determine first, second and third place winners who will be awarded prizes for their efforts.

Use as a theme for your poems your life and experiences of growing up in La Porte County and Michigan City. What is it about our city and countryside that you love and enjoy? Any style of poetry is acceptable.

Take a cue from Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who wrote, “I grew up in this town, my poetry was born between the hill and the river, it took its voice from the rain, and like the timber, it steeped itself in the forests.”

Email your creation to Ester at thenestmichigancity@gmail.com

Include with your submission; your full name/school/teacher’s name/grade level/age (this information will not be shared with the judges)

Deadline for all entries will be midnight March 29.

Winners will be notified in advance of April 20. All who present poems at the April 20 showcase will be awarded certificates of participation. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded.

Don’t forget, songwriters, what you do can also be poetry. Refrain from submitting the same poem/song that you submit for the songwriting contest to the poetry contest.
