Tourism Review

The racing portion of the Great Lakes Super Boat Grand Prix will hit the waters of Lake Michigan on Aug. 2.

Are you ready for some racing?

In just a few weeks, you will be seeing Super Boats driving up Franklin Street, in front of local businesses and in Washington Park.

Our local accommodations will be filling up as race teams and race fans pour into the area, and the excitement builds for the seventh annual Great Lakes Grand Prix.

You will be seeing large, powerful and fast catamarans and v-bottom style boats, as they prepare for the race Aug. 2.

There is a tentative schedule that included VIP events, the Taste of Michigan City, a boat parade and other entertainment. We are still firming up plans for this fun-filled weekend and we are still accepting applications for vendors.

This year, the Taste of Michigan City Block Party will begin July 31. This two-day event features local restaurants, live entertainment and a local brew and wine garden in the Uptown Arts District in downtown Michigan City. Taste hours are 4-11 p.m. July 31 and noon to 11 p.m. Aug. 1.

Make plans to spend Saturday in Washington Park to watch the EVP Beach Volleyball Great Lakes Beach Championships, enjoy the classic car show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., presented by the Four A's Car Club Inc. and try some of the wonderful food that will be offered by the food vendors. The dry pits and wet pits will be open to the public.

The Grand Prix Parade will step off at 10th and Franklin streets at 6:30 p.m. Immediately following the parade the Super Boats will line up on Franklin Street and become a part of the Block Party.

At 8 p.m. travel back to Washington Park to enjoy some live music performed by a local band in the new Washington Park building.

Aug. 2 is race day. There will be two races scheduled, the first race at 11 a.m. and second race at 1 p.m.

The silent auction to benefit the La Porte County Family YMCA, Michigan City Branch will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We already have some great items on our auction table; however, we are still taking donations.

Finally, join us after the race at Blue Chip Casino for the VIP awards ceremony at 6 p.m.
