La Porte golfers beat City, Merrillville

La Porte picked up two Duneland Conference boys golf victories, beating Michigan City and Merrillville on Senior Night at Beechwood Golf Course. La Porte won the triangular with a score of 188. Michigan City was second at 197, and Merrillville third at 255. Slicer senior Conrad Porter led the way with a 45, while Max Holmes put up a 46, Cas Pulaski a 48, and Jack Schable a 49. La Porte's JV won its match against City by a score of 211-248.


IHSAA baseball sectional schedule set

The IHSAA has announced pairings for the state baseball tournament.

In Class 4A, Michigan City and La Porte play in the La Porte Sectional. The host Slicers will play South Bend Clay in a first-round matchup at 5 p.m. May 23, while the Wolves drew a first-round bye and will face the winner of South Bend Riley and South Bend Adams at 5 p.m. May 25.

In Class 3A, New Prairie and John Glenn play in the Marian Sectional in Mishawaka. The Cougars will open against Culver Academy at 4 p.m. May 24, while the Falcons drew defending state champion South Bend St. Joseph in the second game on May 24, both in first-round matchups.

In Class 1A, Marquette and Westville compete in the Westville Sectional, with the host Blackhawks playing Washington Township on May 25 at 5 p.m.; and the Blazers taking on 21st Century at 9 a.m. May 26 in first-round games. South Central, LaCrosse and Oregon-Davis compete in the South Bend Career Academy Sectional. O-D will play Triton at 4:30 p.m. May 24, and the Satellites take on host SB Academy in the second game May 24, both in first-round games. LaCrosse drew a first-round bye and will play the winner of the Culver Community-Argos matchup at 10 a.m. May 26. Sectionals will be played May 23-28.

Winners advance to four-team regional tournaments on June 2.


Softball sectional schedules

In area softball sectional play, in Class 4A, La Porte faces Plymouth in a South Bend Adams Sectional opener on May 21 at about 6 p.m. CDT at LaSalle Softball Field. Michigan City has a first-round bye and plays Valparaiso at 6 p.m. May 22 in a semifinal at the Merrillville Sectional.

In Class 3A, New Prairie meets South Bend Clay at 6 p.m. on May 21 in the first round of the South Bend St. Joseph Sectional, John Glenn gets a bye and plays the Knox-NorthWood winner at 5:45 p.m. May 22 in the Class 3A NorthWood Sectional.

In Class 1A, Marquette faces Covenant Christian at 4:45 p.m. May 21 at a Washington Township Sectional opener, and Westville meets Kouts in another first-round game 4:45 p.m. May 23 at Washington Township. LaCrosse plays Culver in a Triton Sectional opener at 6:30 p.m. May 21, and South Central gets a bye and faces West Central t 6:30 p.m. May 22 in semifinal contest at Triton.

Sectionals are May 21‐26 and 64 winners advance to one‐game regionals on Tuesday, May 29.


Summer baseball camp at PNW

Purdue University Northwest – Westville Campus is hosting a four-day summer baseball camp June 11-14. PNW head coach Dave Griffin will direct the program in conjunction with U.S. Baseball Academy. Classes are available for players in grades K-9 and are limited to seven players per coach. Sessions are offered in hitting, pitching, fielding and baserunning. Registration is under way. Powers-Purdue Golf Invitational June 18

The 38th annual Powers-Purdue University Northwest Golf Invitational is Monday, June 18, at Briar Ridge Country Club in Schererville. The event – a fundraiser for PNW student-athlete scholarships – kicks off at 8 a.m. with a full breakfast before a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Golf outing for pediatric cancer research

The Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation's third annual Mark Hill Memorial Golf Outing at White Hawk Country Club of Crown Point begins at 11 a.m. June 1. Hill, an avid golfer, passed away in 2015 from stomach cancer after planning the event to benefit the NICK Foundation. A golf package is $125 per person or $450 for a group of four, and includes lunch, driving range balls, 18 holes with cart and dinner. Dinner is $35 per person for those who do not golf.
