Detra R. Hernandez, 50, Michigan City, departed this life on Sept. 17, 2016 at Franciscan St. Anthony Memorial Health Center.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m,, Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 730 W. 6th St., with Pastor Jacarra Williams officiating, burial to follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2016 at New Hope Church.
Detra was born June 15, 1966 in Martinsville, Virginia to Metto D. Hernandez and Annie (Fenner) Hernandez.
After graduating high school she enlisted in the United States Navy. Detra graduated and received her Associate degree in Nursing. She worked over ten years at Methodist Hospital. Detra was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist church where she sang in the choir. She loved teaching, working and talking with her family and friends.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories, seven children, Kendra (Jermaine) Prachett, Seattle, Washington, Darius Hernandez, Kiara Hernandez, Caleb Hernandez, Dewain Hernandez, Kiana Hernandez and Chana Hernandez all of Michigan City, Indiana; mother, Annie Hernandez, Michigan City, Indiana; three sisters, Fern (James) Wagstaff, St. Louis, Missouri, Eula Hernandez and Kasey Hernandez both of Michigan City, Indiana; one brother, Dewain (Cassondra) Hernandez, Porter, Indiana; two grandchildren, Darrien Hernandez and Angela Hernandez both of Michigan City, Indiana; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Metto D. Hernandez and grandparents.
